The Makgadikgadi lake is 80 000 square km in size, and is one of the largest salt pans in the world. The present park covers some 4,900 square kilometres. The Makgadikgadi is in fact a series of pans, the largest of which are Sowa and Ntwetwe, North of these two pans are Kudiakam pan, Nxai Pan and Kaucaca Pan. The Makgadikgadi Pans is situated in the central region of the country and covers approximate 12 000 square kilometres, The Makgadikgadi Pans Game Reserve is the scene of large migrations of zebra and wildebeest from the Boteti River across to Ntwetwe Pan,
Animals in this park include: buffalo, zebras, lechwe, bushbuck, puku antelope, lions, Hyena, leopard, giraffe, kudu, roan and sable, impala, warthog, monkeys, baboons, jackal, waterbuck gemsbok, eland, red hartebeest, bushbuck, duiker, giraffe, springbok, steenbok, elephant and wildebeest
Bird species include: African fish eagles, Sacred ibis, Egyptian Geese, Spur-winged Geese, pel’s Fishing Owl, carmine Bee-eaters, Martial Eagle, finfoot and the halfcollared kingfisher
